How To Introduce The Baby to the Family Dog

It is one a very special occasion when you bring your new baby home for the first time. But some new parents have an additional concern. Families with pets stress about how their dog may respond to the new bundle of joy. This is particularly true with older dogs that haven't been exposed to infants before. Below are some pointers to help make the introduction simpler and safer for your newly born child.

  • Before coming back home from the hospital or during pregnancy, it is often wise to start making lifestyle changes so your dog can settle into their new role more swiftly. For instance, get started on training your dog, buy a cheap doll that makes practical baby like sounds. Let your dog become used to the sounds of a baby crying and to the smells of baby products. Now is the time for your pooch to be more flexible and let her/him that your lap won't be theirs any more.
  • When coming back home from the hospital, it frequently helps if your partner can carry in the new born child. This gives the your dog the opportunity to re-unite with the mom first. It's imperative to avoid making a negative first impression by telling your dog to, get off or go away, in this new experience of having a new baby.
  • Watch your dog closely for any discomfort potential difficulties with aggression. If in doubt, take the time to train your dog like a professional.
  • If you have not done so already, teach your dog some helpful control cues. Some of the most helpful around a child is ,down, stay and leave it.
  • Be careful never leave a dog alone with a baby even if your dog is well trained because the dog behavior changes, and even good dogs can become aggressive.
  • Make the first meeting of baby and dog positive and calm. Ideally you need to create a highly positive relationship right from the start. You might also want to let your dog sniff a piece of your new baby's clothing first. Have a leash on your dog for safety.
  • Families with new babies are busy. If you don't have the wherewithal to exercise your dog ask a member of the family to help by giving the dog some exercise. Nowadays, dog walkers are available at reasonable costs and are another option. A exercised dog is a good dog.
  • Give your dog some quiet time. A crying child awakes you, and awakes your dog. Ensure the dog gets enough sleep.

Dog Training Is Important -Things dog owners should do now:

If you have not already given your dog  dog obedience training, you may need to consider doing that now. Problem's may arise when your baby starts crawling so  its better to plan ahead of time.

When teaching  your dog “leave it” command.  Consider using a word like “mine,” instead. Mine is a typical toddler word, and in the future, you would be really glad that your dog thinks the word, “mine” means “leave it.”
Do bite prevention exercises. If you have these sorts of exercises before Great! Do them again. Dog behavior fluctuates over the life-time of a dog.Prevention is the best cure.

Put a jar of dog cookies by your door and ask the friend and family visiting your new baby to take a minute to say, “hi” to your dog and offer him cookies. Make it simple for your dog to feel special.
Keep both your baby and your dog safe. Kids toys may not be safe for your dog and dog toys may not be safe for your kid. You will likely need to pay attention to both of them for a while.
