Bulldog

The Ancestry of the Bulldog is traced back from Molussus. This is the fighting name from an ancient Greek tribe, the Molossi. It was bred to bait bulls, there is a story on how the sport started in Britain in 1204, when Lord Stamford was very amused by the sight of some butcher’s dogs tormenting a bull. The Lordship then had the idea of providing a field for bull-baiting tournaments to take place; in return the butcher provided one bull a year for the sport. Bull-baiting became illegal in 1835 because of the bulldogs being in danger of extinction. Mr. Bill George continued to breed Bulldogs and in 1875, the first specialist club was formed for the breed. This became known as the Bulldog Club Incorporated. This was followed by the London Bulldog Society. The Bulldog can have a fearful appearance, but is quite the opposite in personality. Bulldogs love children and make a wonderful family pet. The grooming only requires a daily run through with a stiff brush and rub-down.


Bulldog Characteristics
•    The shoulders on a Bulldog are broad, sloping and deep.
•    They are strong and muscular, and give the appearance of being tacked onto its body.
•    Bulldogs are non-sporting dogs.
•    The weight for this dogs is 50-55Ibs and the bitches are 40-50Ibs.

Boston Terrier


The Boston terrier originally comes from a crossbred Bulldog/Terrier. The Bulldog/Terrier was imported into the United States from Britain in 1865. Barnard’s Tom became the first example of the breed with the desired screw tail, and bred in Boston, Massachusetts. Therefore, the breed takes its name from the city it was born in. Boston Terriers need little grooming and are not difficult to look after. Terriers are very determined and self willed, but always a joy to have around the house.
Boston terrier Characteristics
•    The ideal markings for a correct show specimen would be: a white muzzle, a white blaze over the head and down the collar, also breast and forelegs below the elbows.
•    The Terrier is well balanced with a short body and compactly built.
•    The coat is short and smooth.
•    The color is brindle with white markings, and the brindle must show throughout the body with white markings.
•    The head is square and flat on top, round eyes are set wide apart.
•    A Broad square jaw and the ears erect at corners of head.
•    Broad chest; fine low-head set.
•    Non-sporting type of dog.
•    The weight is divided by classes; lightweight under 15Ibs, middleweight under 20Ibs, and heavyweight under 25Ibs.

 

Dalmatians

The Dalmatian name originates from the Dalmatia on the Adriatic coast. The Dalmatian breed was popular in Britain and was first established there. The Dalmatians registrations doubled when the film 101 Dalmatians came out. The breed also receiving a boost in 1978 when Mrs. E. J. Woodyatt’s Champion Fanhill Faune, won the coveted best in show award at the Crufts, in London. Dalmatians are very affectionate, energetic dogs. They need plenty of exercise and daily grooming due to the shedding of white hairs.
Characteristics of Dalmatians
•    The spotted nose of the black Dalmatian is always black, while the liver spotted varies in brown.
•    The coat is short, dense fine and close, also being glossy and sleek in appearance.
•    The Dalmatian has a long head and flat skull, the eyes are somewhat far apart and a medium-sized ears that are set high.
•    They have a deep chest, and a long tail that is carried with a upward curve.
•    The height at withers is 19-23in. while the weight is 50-55Ibs.
•    Dalmatians are non-sporting dogs.
•    The color is pure white with black or live spots, not running together but round and well defined. The spots on extremities are smaller than those on the body.


Schipperke

The Schipperke is thought to be a Dutch dog, but originated in Belgium. This breed may have been developed in the mid 1500s. Schipperke is Flemish for “little Captain” and been translated as “little skipper”, “little boatman”, and “little corporal.” Schipperkes are good with children and affectionate dogs. They are great watchdogs and long lived. They are able to walk up to six miles a day without becoming tired, they should be housed inside instead of in a kennel and need little grooming with their coat.
Schipperke Characteristics
•    Schipperkes’ feet are small and cat like; they have sharp, foxy, expressions and a short, straight and long back.
•    There height at withers is 11-13in. and bitches are 10-12in. their weight is 12-18Ibs.
•    The coat is dense and abundant, with longer hair on the shoulders, neck, back of rear legs and chest.
•    There head is broad with a flat skull, also having oval dark brown eyes.
•    The ears are somewhat long and broad deep chest, and a docked tail.
•    Schipperkes’ class is non-sporting.
•    They are black, while the undercoat may be lighter

Finnish Spitz

In its native land the Finnish Spitz is known as Suomenpystykorva, meaning cock-eared dog. The Finnish Spitz is mentioned in many Finnish national songs and is the national dog of Finland. This breed is related to the Russian Laika and originated in the eastern part of Finland. It is now popular in Scandinavia for hunting grouse and other game birds. The Finnish Spitz was introduced in Britain during the 1920s. The introduction was by the late Lady Kitty Ritson, who decided on the nickname Finkie for the breed. They love being outdoors and also are a home-loving pet. Adept at guarding while being great with children.
Finnish Spitz Characteristics
•    This breed requires lots of exercise and daily grooming.
•    The color is reddish-brown or red-gold on back, lighter shades permissible on the underside.
•    Coat is short and close on head and front legs, semi-erect and stiff on neck and back, also longer on body and back of legs.
•    The Finnish Spitz is a non-sporting dog.
•    Tail plumed, curves vigorously from the root and medium-sized head and eyes.
•    Ears small, cocked and sharply pointed and there body is almost square in outline.
•    The height at withers for dogs is 17-20in. and for bitches is 15-18in. while the weight is 25-35 Lb.

 

French Bulldog

The French Bulldog had many famous owners, such as King Edward VII of England and the French novelist, Colette. A French Bulldog club was formed in 1902 in Britain and in 1912 the breed became accepted by the British kennel Club. By the year 1913, the breed achieved 100 entries at Westminister Dog Show in New York. This dog makes a wonderful companion while being easy and popular at the shows. Just requires a daily grooming and a rub down with a handkerchief to make its coat shine. The “Frenchie” usually gets along with children and other pets well. The facial crease should be lubricated so no soreness is felt and this flat–nosed breed should not be exercise in hot weather.
French Bulldog Characteristics
•    There coat is smooth, short, close and finely textured.
•    French Bulldogs’ color consists of brindle, pied or fawn.
•    They are a non-sporting class.
•    They have a large, broad and square head, eyes dark and set wide apart.
•    Their ears are “Bat ears” broad at the base and rounded at tips, set high and carried upright.
•    Body short, muscular and cobby, with a short tail.
•    The average height for French Bulldogs is 12 inches and the weight is 28Ib for dogs and 24Ib for bitches.

Schnauzer

The Schnauzer, also called the Standard Schnauzer is the oldest of three varieties, the others including the Giant and Miniature. It was originally used as an all-purpose farm dog, and is a good ratter. The Schnauzers movement is very balanced, free and vigorous. They are playful, enjoy plenty of exercise and intelligent. Their hardy, harsh, wiry coat needs a particular amount of stripping and plucking. Pet dogs can be clipped, but for showing this will spoil the coat, so the owners wanting to exhibit their Schnauzers are told to discuss grooming with the breeder at time of purchase.

•    Their coat has a soft undercoat, while being harsh and wiry.
•    The color is pure black with white markings on head, chest and legs undesirable.

Giant and Miniature Schnauzer

The Giant Schnauzer or Riesenschnauzer was known as the Munchener Dog for many years. This is because it originated for an area near Munich. It has thought to have evolved from crosses between rough coated shepherd dogs and smooth-coated drovers’. Giant Schnauzer made its first appearance in the show ring at Munich in 1909, and then it was being listed in the catalog as a Russian Bear Schnauzer. The Giant Schnauzer was not as popular as the Miniature or Standard and would have become instinct if not proven itself as a great guard dog in World War One. After the Second World War the dedicated fanciers in Germany worked to secure the deserved popularity for the Giant Schnauzer. The Miniature Schnauzer or Zwergschnauzer (its native German name) was derived from the crossing of Standard Schnauzer and smaller dogs. The breed was first exhibited in 1899, becoming established in Germany in the 1920s. In Canada and United States the Miniature Schnauzer is classified as a terrier, in Britain it is regarded as a member of utility group instead of terrier and popular as a family pet and in the show ring. Makes great for a child companion and does well in obedience. The Miniature Schnauzers also need a good amount of exercise.
German Spitz

Spitz are thought to have been brought from Scandinavia by the Vikings and because of the many varieties of Spitz its hard to say if this is the actual origin. German Spitz were becoming known as early as 1700 when black specimens were kept in Württemberg and white ones in Pomeranian. German Spitz are very independent, being alert and active. They are very devoted to their human family, yet if the breed is left alone it has a tendency to yap. They need a good amount of daily brushing and decent exercise routines.
German Spitz Characteristics
•    Their standard height is 11.5-13 inches and small height is 9-11 inches, while standard weight is 25lb and small weight is 7lb.
•    Their coat is soft and they have a woolly undercoat with a straight, long, dense outer coat.

Japanese Spitz

The Japanese Spitz ancestors were supposedly taken to Japan in ships of traders a long time ago, at this time the breed was made in isolation. Japanese Spitz are proving their popularity at dog shows are a favorite dog in Japan. This breed is not friendly towards strangers, but very good to its owner. makes for a great small guard dog being aggressive when needed and needing good amount of exercise.

Keeshond

The Keeshond is actually pronounced Kayshond, and was said to have been derived from the Arctic breed. Keeshond's have a personality that tends to be devoted to one person; they have a long life expectancy and are great overall dogs. Keeshonds’ require grooming with a stiff brush and make sure to not use a chock chain as it will spoil the ruff. They also need a good amount of exercise for each day.

Shiba Inu

The name for Shiba Inu means, “little dog” and this breed is associated with Gifu, Toyama, and Nagano in central Japan. Shiba Inu is a great dog to use as a guard and hunting of small game. They are quite friendly and have a great personality. Great to use in the show ring and to keep them looking good they need a decent amount of daily brushing and exercise.

•    Shiba Inu’s coat is usually harsh, short and straight
•    They are muscularly built, have almond shaped eyes, and long tail that curls up high.
•    Shiba Inus’ are a non-sporting class dog.
•    Height at shoulders for dogs is 15-16 inches and weight 20-30lb, the height for bitches is 14-15 inches.
Chow chow

Chow Chow’s share the same characteristics with small bears and have a black tongue, making them the only dog with this feature. Its name derived from the Chinese Choo Hunting Dog, and it was bred for its flesh, fur and a hunter of game. Chow Chows are previous hunters of wolf and to this day are great show dogs and companions. It is unlikely to attack without being provoked first, but the chow chow does have a ferocious side. They need firm, gentle handing and a daily walk for exercise. Chow chows also need enough attention towards their coat using a wire brush.

Shar-Pei

Also known as the Chinese Fighting Dog Shar-Pei originated in Tibet or China’s Northern Provinces. In their fighting days they had an advantage from other opponents because of their loose skin and the other opponents not able to grip onto them. They are a loosely skinned breed and were used to herd flocks or hunt wild boar in China. They are a very rare kind of dog and give off a frowning expression. They also show affection and have a mellow, calm personality. Their coat never needs trimming, but they needs a good amount of exercise.
Shar-Pei Characteristics
•    Their coat is straight, briskly and short with no undercoat.
•    Their coloring consists of only solid colors such as; red, black, light fawn, cream or dark fawn.
•    They have a large head, small pointed ears that rest on their head and rounded skinny tail.
•    Shar-Pei is a non-sporting class dog.
•    Their weight is 40-55lbs and their height at withers is 18-20 inches.
Lhasa Apso

Lhasa Apso's are known as the Tibetan Apso, and are originally from Tibet. Since the meaning of the word apso is goat-like they say the dog is named that from their coat similarity to a goats. These dogs came to Britain in the 1930s and the Tibetan Breed Association was formed in 1934. This breed is a small, indoor, watchdog that is very happy and unusually long lived. They are quite adaptable and great with children. Lhasa Apso's need careful daily grooming due to their long coat.

Shih Tzu

Shih Tzu has been thought to have originated in Western China and the Chinese meaning is "lion dog."The Shih Tzu is a courageous little dog and loves to try new experiences, they resemble a Lhasa Apso but have a shortened face. They make a great house pet and are good with children, having a farely happy personality to show off. They require a good daily grooming with a bristle brush, and their topknot is normally tied with a bow. Their upright head and round eyes are a expression that they are an alert, independent character, they should not have their nose down pointed.
Shih Tzus Characteristics

•    Shih Tzu is a non-sporting class dog.

Tibetan Spaniel

Although its name has Spaniel in it, the Tibetan Spaniel is not related to the Spaniel breed in any way. Its origins are not known since the Tibetan Spaniel was existing long before the history of Tibet started to be chronicled. These dogs were a favorite with monks and often kept in monasteries. Tibetan Spaniels make great household pets and are very independent. They are rarely seen outside the show ring. Its coat needs regular grooming and this dog has a energetic personality.

Tibetan Terrier


The Tibetan Terrier resembles a small Old English Sheepdog, and is not associated with any type of terrier at all. They are said to have been bred in Tibetan monasteries, and were presented to travelers as mascots, or good luck. This breed is not over populated as most dogs and not well known in America. This dog becomes very devoted to its family but somewhat apprehensive of strangers. The length of their coat needs daily grooming to keep from tangling up. They are great dogs if you like Old English Sheepdogs but you prefer a smaller version.

Bichon Frise


Bichon Frise were first introduced to sailors in Tenerife in the Canary Islands, and the word "bichon" describes small or white dogs. The Bichon Frise is actually internationally recognized as a Franco-Belgium breed and become introduced to the United States in 1956. They are quite friendly and happy dogs to be around, and soft and cuddly to snuggle with. Their coats need to be regularly scissored to maintain and a fair amount of exercise.

Standard Poodle


The standard Poodle is known as the Caniche in France and originated in Germany. The standard Poodle has the ability to retain a gunshot and and quite a good swimmer. This breed of dog is popular as a circus dog and in obedience trials due to its eagerness to learn and succeed. Standard Poodles make great for a family pet being very lovable, friendly, and good-tempered. They enjoy a good amount of exercise and are wonderful show dogs also. There are different ways the fur can be clipped such as the; lamb clip and lion clip and all these styles require a wire-toothed metal comb and wire-pin pneumatic brush for daily grooming. Along with the pet poodle these dogs require a canine beauty parlor every six weeks. 

Standard Poodle Characteristics
•    The height at shoulders for Standard Poodles is 15 inches and the weight is 45 to 70 pounds, the height for Miniatures is 10-15 inches and the height for Toy Poodles is 10 inches.
•    Standard Poodles are a non-sporting class dog.
•    Their coats are a hard texture and profuse while also dense.
•    Their coloring is only solid and clear colors are preferred.

Miniature Poodle


The Miniature Poodle, with smaller specimen, was bred down from the standard and ended up producing the smaller version called the Toy Poodle. They are extremely long living dogs and its possible for them to survive for 17 or more years. in the 1950s the Miniature Poodle was the most popular, this is because as people migrated to towns, the working breeds became less popular.

•    Miniature Poodle carries the same show standard as larger or smaller breeds.
•    Just as the Standard, the Miniature Poodle requires regular visits to the beauty parlour.

Toy Poodle

the Toy Poodle is a descendant of the Miniature Poodle just as the Standard is. They were in a very high demand and in the middle of the 1950s, UK kennel Club opened a separate register for them. Its very important to select this breed from a sound stock, but keep in mind out of the three different Poodles the Toy is the least robust. 

Toy Poodle Characteristics
•    They are a good tempered and very happy breed, making a wonderful pet and companion.
•    The Toy Poodle carries the same show standards as the larger Poodles, and the only difference is the size.
•    They are also exhibited in the same clips as other Poodles are.
•    Just like the others they require continuous visits to the beauty parlor.
•    To brush them you need a wire-toothed metal comb and wire-pin pneumatic brush.
•    They are a non-sporting class breed as well.
Mastiff

Mastiffs were especially admired by the Babylonians over 4000 years ago and are actually one of the most ancient breeds of dogs. Their main uses consist of a guard and hunter dog, they are extremely large and distinguished. They need regular walks for building up their muscle, and keep in mind they have a personality that is devoted to its owner.

Mastiff Characteristics
•    Mastiffs weight may range from 170-195lbs, and the height for dogs is 30 inches while bitches is 27.5 inches.
•    They are a working class dog.
•    Their coloring may be fawn, apricot or brindle and nose, ears, or muzzle is black.
•    Their undercoat is dense and is close-lying while outer coat is straight and short.
•    Mastiffs small eyes are set wide apart and tail is high on top of their body.
Pyrenean Mastiff

Pyrenean Mastiffs originated from the Pyrenees and is a Spanish breed. In the Pyrenees they used Pyrenean Mastiffs for guarding flocks, this was during the annual migrations. Despite Pyrenean Mastiffs being a guard dog, they are friendly, dependable, good-natured and intelligent. They are better suited for experienced dog owners and require lots of exercise.

Pyrenean Mastiff Characteristics
•    Pyrenean Mastiffs have a medium length coat, while it it very dense and thick.
•    They are a working class dog.
•    The height for this breed at withers is 27.5-31.5 inches and bitches weigh 121-155lbs.
•    They can be white with grey or golden, and they have some markings on head or body.
•    There other features consist of small ears, large head, dark small eyes, and a supple tail.
Tibetan Mastiff

Tibetan Mastiffs are a breed which are from the Molossus and a fighting dog of ancient Rome. They originated from central Asia, there they guarded flocks and you may still find them there as of today. They were imported by King George IV into Britain, and early this century reached America. This breed is great for a watch or guard dog, and protective of its owner. They have a good temperament unless you provoke them, and are slow to mature usually waiting till the age of 3-4. Regular exercise and daily grooming are a must with Tibetan Mastiffs.
Tibetan Mastiff Characteristics
•    The minimum weight is 180 lb and the height for dogs is 26 inches while bitches is 24 inches.
•    Tibetan Mastiffs are a working class dog.
•    Their coat is medium length, and they have a heavy undercoat and thicker for males then females.
•    Their colors can range from black and tan, plain black, gold, brown, grey and grey with gold markings.
•    Their tails are curled back just like the Chow Chows and they have a big, broad head.
Spanish Mastiff

Just as the Tibetan Mastiff is, the Spanish Mastiff is also a descendant of the Molossus of ancient Rome. This breed was used in organized dog fights and as a guard dog protected stock in the traditional seasonal migrations of Southern Spain. They used to crop the ears back and dock the tail to reduce any type of injury in combat. Spanish Mastiffs are very strong and have a lot of stamina, they are responsive to training and loyal dogs. Needs lots of exercise and is best for a owner with previous dog experience, also requires daily grooming.

Spanish Mastiff Characteristics
•    Their coats are thick and short, and extremely course.
•    Spanish Mastiffs are a working class dog.
•    Their height at shoulders for dogs is 26-28 inches while bitches are a bit smaller, their weight ranges from 110 to 132lb.
•    Their coloring consists of fawn, wolf grey, brindle or white and they usually have fawn or black markings.
•    They have a short, thick tail that is carried low, small, dark eyes, and a broad head.
Neapolitan Mastiff

Neapolitan Mastiffs are a descendant of the fighting mastiffs of ancient Rome and were bred as fighting dogs. They are one of the largest and heaviest dogs and in its native land wears a spiked collar and cropped ears. Neapolitan Mastiffs are not yet known in the USA, but is well known in other parts of the world and was first exhibited as a show dog in Naples. They are friendly pets and only dangerous when told to attack by command. They do best when given a job to do and do need some space. Neapolitan Mastiffs require plenty of exercise and daily grooming.
Neapolitan Mastiff Characteristics
•    Their weight can range from 110-150lb and the height for dogs is 25.5 to 28.5 inches while bitches are between 23.5 and 27 inches.
•    Neapolitan Mastiffs are working class dogs.
•    Their coat is dense, smooth and a short length.
•    The coloring on Neapolitan's may be black, mouse grey or lead and sometimes they have small, white spots on the tip of their toes or chest.
•    They have small ears, eyes that are wide apart, a thick tail, broad head and thick set body type.
Bull mastiff


Bull Mastiffs were developed 200 to 300 years ago and, they are a cross between the Mastiff and British Bulldog. They have a reputation for ferocity and were used for bull-baiting until it was outlawed. Breeders worked to make a type that was 60% Mastiff and 40% Bulldog. They are playful, loyal and great guard dogs. They need an experienced dog owner and are too powerful for a child or young adult.

Doberman

Dobermans were developed by Louis Doberman, he developed his stock around the German Pincher and from this he introduced the Rottweiler. From the Rottweiler and Manchester Terrier the Doberman was introduced. The Doberman inherited its markings and pointer from the Manchester Terrier. They are always on alert and are great for guard dogs. Dobermans also make a great show dog, and carry good obedience. They require knowledgeable training and handling but make a great family pet. Dobermans need lots of exercise and need grooming every couple of days.

Dogue De Bordeaux





The Dogue De Bordeaux is a french Mastiff but is also know as the Dogue de Burgos in Spain and the Mastino Neapolitan in Italy. In France it is prized as the national watchdog. this breed was used to guard flocks against wolves and bears, and has also been known to be in bull and dog fights. They have a calm temperament, but also make a great watchdog and guard. They are usually good with children but are powerful dogs and should have an experienced dog owner.
Dogue De Bordeaux Characteristics

•    Dogue De Bordeaux is a working class dog.

Mudi



The breed Mudi herded cattle and sheep and hunted wild boar in Hungary where it originated. Mudi's have also been a great guard dog and dispeller of vermin. They are very brave and intelligent dogs, and love giving their owners affection. They also make for a great watchdog and are very loyal dogs. Mudi's need a good amount of exercise and require daily grooming.

Great Dane



In Germany the Great Dane is known as the Deutsche Dogge which is the German Mastiff. They are the tallest of all the dog breeds but should not be kenneled out of doors despite their large size. Great Danes are easy to train and extremely good natured dogs. They should not be teased because they might misinterpret a action. They require regular exercise and grooming on a daily basiswith a body brush. The Great Dane lives on a average of only 8 to 9 years, which is a disappointment for many people.

Brazilian Guard Dog

 

 

This breed is a descended from Spanish Mastiffs and were introduced into South American in the 16th century, they are also known as Fila Brasileiro. They are a Mastiff type breed and are a cross between dogs in Brazil and Mastiffs. They are obedient with their owners but may be unsafe with strangers. Brazilian Guard Dogs need training to control their aggressions and to be safe. Their grooming should be regular and you should use a hound glove, and exercise should be done regularly.
